During WWII cribbage was quite a popular game among the allied troops. Visit any military base of the time during off hours, and it wouldn’t take long to find a cribbage game being played.

Military equipment of the day was very heavy, but enthusiasts could slip a deck of cards, and a small leather cribbage scoring board into their knapsacks without out much notice, or additional weight. Having  the odd game while on a deployment must have been an anticipated diversion.

Mid Century Loon Cribbage Board - Very similar design to the Crisloid Co.'s Cribbage board, but has no manufacturers identification. Estimated to be Circa 1960-70’s.

It is not uncommon to find modern U.S. cribbage boards that were manufactured in the latter half of the 20th Century to have outdoor, or nature scenes incorporated into the design.  It’s a natural progression as these cribbage boards were often taken to the family cottage, or on road trips to help pass the time.

These days board games of all types have been replaced with technology devices such as cell phones, tablets, and personal lap tops, but you can still find many examples like this hiding in a lake cottage closet, or toy chest.

This loon cribbage board was decorated with a simple graphic which seems to have been screen printed. This type of board could have just as easily been manufactured using water slide decal which was common process at the time.

Although it looks very similar to the Crisloid boards that were manufactured during the years mentioned, there is no indication of who the manufacturer actually was. If any of the readers here have come across this board before, or know who may have manufactured it. Please leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Ideally someone may have one of these in the original box, assuming there was a box, which is always a great help in determining the history of a cribbage board.

Drueke Deluxe Walnut 2-Track Cribbage Board

Reviews for this board are mixed, with the primary complaint being that there are plastic rather than metal pegs included with the game. The price point would typically indicate that the game would come with at least a traditional style wooden peg.  Maybe there are other variables at play.

Metal pegs would be a really nice addition, but trying to include them could very well be cost prohibitive.  The thing about this board is that given it is “American Made”, ” Solid Walnut”, and it retains the “Drueke Brand” it really is rather inexpensive, and you can always purchase your own metal pegs separately.

One would believe that the price point was a major consideration on this item. Drueke new board sales have apparently been dwindling away over the last couple of decades. Unfortunately for the Carrom Co. this began around the time of their acquisition of the company.  This could be The Carrom companies attempt at getting product with the Drueke name back into the market. Although most standard size cribbage board pegs are designed to fit an 1/8″ diameter hole, if you are planning to make your own crib pegs you should still take the time to measure the size of the holes in your cribbage board. The standard peg is typically 1 1/8″ tall and tapered to fit smoothly in and out of the hole.

You will generally need 3 pegs per track… two for pegging (keeping score) and the other for keeping track of the number of games won. For more elaborate boards you may use additional pegs for scoring skunks, turns and various other stats of the game or tournament.
